17 Energy & SC Power launch Viento Azul Biobío Consortium, pledging to drive Chile's Offshore Wind future
17 Energy & SC Power today unveiled the Viento Azul Biobío (VAB) Consortium, a groundbreaking partnership aimed at developing Chile's offshore wind industry. The consortium brought together government officials, industry leaders, and community representatives at a launch event in Concepción to discuss the immense potential of offshore wind and the consortium's role in realizing it.
The vision behind the VAB consortium is to support large-scale decarbonisation of the electricity network. This will help in the fight against climate change, related environmental pollution and biodiversity loss, diversify the country's energy mix, and create a sustainable economic foundation. By working closely with local communities, industry, and government, VAB aims to develop offshore wind projects that deliver tangible benefits to Chile.
"This is a pivotal moment for Chile's energy future," said Daniel Perdomo, Director at 17 Energy. "The Viento Azul Biobío Consortium is committed to building a strong, sustainable offshore wind industry that creates jobs, drives economic growth, and protects our environment. Today we are taking our first steps in our journey to realising offshore wind in Chile”.
Rodrigo Corvalán, Articulación de Stakeholders at SC Power added, "We believe that offshore wind can be a catalyst for transformation in Chile. By working collaboratively with stakeholders and communities, we can develop projects that not only generate clean energy but also empower local communities, create new opportunities for industry and businesses and secure the future for our next generations."
The event in Concepción featured a panel discussion with industry experts who explored the potential of offshore wind to accelerate Chile's energy transition, diversify the energy mix, and create new social and economic opportunities. The VAB consortium emphasized its commitment to truly listening and engaging with local communities, industry, fisheries and government to unlock the social license to develop alongside driving equity across development and ensuring shared benefits across the development lifecycle.
